Automatic email forwarding from University mailboxes to end from 25 November
The Vice Chancellor's Advisory Group (VCAG) has recently approved a proposal to stop automatic email forwarding from University mailboxes to external email addresses from Monday 25 November 2019. This will help protect us from a commonly used method of online phishing attack when an account has been compromised.
Please note: This will not prevent you from manually forwarding emails or using Out of Office. If you or a member of your team is leaving or taking extended absence, please set up an Out of Office requesting the sender emails another member of the team or shared account.
Who does this apply to?
This applies if you have set up a rule or forwarder to automatically forward emails from your UR mailbox to an external mailbox:
- Forwarding set up via the O365 Outlook Web Client (Settings > View All Outlook Settings > Email > Forwarding) will disappear and the forwards will stop working. The system will prevent you from creating new forwards. You will not receive a notification that forwarding has been stopped.
- If you have set up a rule in O365 Outlook Web Client or Outlook Desktop client, you will need to delete this. The system will not forward the emails on. The system will notify you that the forward will not work. This will continue each time the rule is triggered, until the rule is deleted.
