IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ Windows 10 to Windows 11 upgrade for UoR-owned staff devices
Dear colleagues
As you will be aware, all staff devices are being upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11 to provide a more secure, reliable, and modern computing experience (you can type 'winver' in the search bar to see your Windows version). For compatible devices, this upgrade will be a remote process as outlined below . Can ALL STAFF who are not on Windows 11 already, please follow the process below:
What do I need to do ASAP?
- Move all important locally stored files (i.e. on the device) to your OneDrive or Departmental SharePoint and thereafter use them from those locations. This has been standard procedure for some time and most of you will already do this. Any files remaining on the device may be permanently lost during the upgrade. How to save files to your OneDrive

When will my device be remotely upgraded?
We are unable to clearly identify when specific devices will be upgraded. The upgrade will be released to compatible devices in batches over the next 4-8 weeks and the following applies once your device is included in one of these batched (you can accelerate this by typing 'Check for updates' in your search bar, and if the Win11 update is available for your device, you can choose to manually install it immediately.)
If you choose not to upgrade manually, Windows will try and do so in the background for 2 days (and prompt for a reboot afterwards). Once oyu are prompted, you know your device is in the batch currently being upgraded. You can choose
- 'Restart Now' - Recommended if you have the time, your machine will upgrade and reboot.
- 'Pick a Time' - Your machine will upgrade and reboot at the selected time.
- Restart Tonight' - Your machine will upgrade and reboot between 18:00 that evening and 08:00 the following morning.
Time to upgrade and reboot could vary from 10 mins to an hour. For option 2. and 3. please ensure your machine will not be hibernating or on low battery during this time as that will prevent the upgrade.
NOTE1: If your device is not capable of being upgraded in this manner, Service Desk or IT will be in touch to help upgrade your device via other means.
NOTE2: If things go wrong during the upgrade process, try rebooting your machine before reporting. If the issue still exists, please use the channels below to notify us, clearly supplying your name, machine name, issue details or error message, and how to contact you (email or phone number). If possible. This is only for reporting Win 11 upgrade issues and all other issues should be reported via the usual Service Desk process.
Best Regards
Service Desk & IT Services.
